Why your water tank needs cleaning twice a year
Sediment, biofilm and rust build up quietly. Here is what actually happens inside a neglected tank and how to tell yours is overdue.
Water leaving the treatment plant is usually fine. What happens in your building's tank is a different story.
What builds up inside
Over months, sediment settles at the bottom, rust flakes from older steel tanks and a biofilm forms on the walls. None of it is visible from the tap until it is significant.
Signs you are overdue
- Water smells faintly earthy or metallic
- Sediment collects in the bottom of buckets
- Filters clog faster than they used to
- It has been more than a year, full stop
What proper cleaning involves
Draining, manual sludge removal, scrubbing all internal surfaces, disinfection and a thorough flush before the supply is restored. A crew that only hoses the tank down is not cleaning it.
How often
Every six months for households, and every three to four months for buildings with high usage or older tanks. Factories should align it with their maintenance calendar.
