How to choose a caregiver for an elderly parent in Dhaka
Six things to check before you hand over the care of someone you love, from references to what happens when the caregiver is sick.
Choosing a caregiver is one of the most consequential decisions a family makes. Price matters, but it is rarely the thing that goes wrong. These are the checks that actually predict a good outcome.
1. Ask what training they actually received
'Experienced' is not a qualification. Ask specifically about patient handling, hygiene routine and what they would do in a fall. A good agency will describe their training programme without hesitation.
2. Meet the person, not just the agency
You are hiring a person who will be in your home every day. Insist on an introduction before placement and treat it as an interview. Comfort matters more than credentials.
3. Confirm the replacement policy in writing
Caregivers get sick, take leave and sometimes simply do not work out. Ask what happens on day three if it is not working, and get the answer in writing.
4. Agree the routine in advance
Write a simple daily routine: medication times, meal times, mobility needs, who to call in an emergency. Ambiguity is where disputes start.
5. Check how updates reach you
If you are abroad, daily updates are the difference between peace of mind and constant anxiety. Confirm the channel and the times.
6. Walk through the emergency plan
Which hospital, which contact, which doctor. Ten minutes of planning prevents panic later.
